Troubleshooting · MCP Server for Odoo

"Model not found" or "Access denied" from the Odoo MCP Server

The API key has no access to that model in Key Model Access. Add an entry for the missing model with the permissions that key should have, then reconnect the client.

What you are seeing

  • A tool call fails with "Model not found" naming an Odoo model
  • "Access denied" for one model while other models answer normally
  • The assistant can read customers but not invoices, or vice versa

What causes it

The API key does not have access to that model in Key Model Access. The whitelist is per key and default-deny, so a model nobody granted is reported as unavailable rather than silently queried.

How to fix it

  1. Identify the model the assistant asked for. The error names the technical model, not the menu label — sale.order rather than Sales Orders, account.move rather than Invoices. Note the exact string.
  2. Add it under MCP → Key Model Access. Create an entry for that key and that model. Grant read first and confirm the call works before considering write.
  3. Check the Odoo user behind the key can reach it too. Model access narrows what the key may request; it cannot widen what the Odoo user is allowed to see. If the underlying user has no ACL rights on that model, the call still fails after you grant it. Check the user's group memberships.
  4. Reconnect the client. So it re-reads the tool list and picks up the newly granted model.

How to confirm it is fixed

Ask the assistant a question that touches only the newly granted model. A successful answer confirms both the grant and the underlying ACL.

Which Odoo models should I expose to an AI assistant first?

Start with the read-only models behind the questions you actually want answered — commonly sale.order, crm.lead, res.partner and account.move for reporting. Grant the smallest set that works, then widen it. Every model you add is a model an assistant can be talked into reading, so the short list is the safer one.

Can scopes give the AI more access than the Odoo user has?

No. Scopes and model access narrow access only — they never elevate it. Odoo's own ACLs and record rules remain the governing layer, so an assistant acting as a given user can never see more than that user could see in the Odoo interface.

If that was not it

The full setup reference lives in the MCP Server documentation, and How to connect Claude to Odoo walks through a clean install from the start. Free setup support is included with the MCP Server for Odoo — if none of the above matches what you are seeing, send us the audit log entry and we will read it with you.
