Odoo 20 AI credits
what needs them, what does not

Odoo 20's release notes contain one line with a direct effect on your monthly bill: all AI features now need credits, bought through in-app purchase. Here is what that covers, what it does not, and the one question Odoo has not answered yet.

What changed in Odoo 20

Odoo 20 shipped in September 2026, and among a long list of AI improvements the release notes carry a short line under the heading IAP credits required: "All AI features now need credits, which can be bought via IAP."

That is a pricing change dressed as a feature note, and it is easy to miss next to the agent capabilities announced beside it — agents that create and update records, generate images, run from scheduled actions and update themselves. The capabilities are the headline. The credits line is the one that shows up on an invoice.

In-app purchase is Odoo's existing metered-service mechanism — the same model behind SMS, lead enrichment and document digitisation. You buy a balance, services draw it down, and when it runs out the feature stops until you top it up. Applying it to AI means AI cost now scales with use rather than sitting inside the subscription.

What draws on credits

Odoo's wording is deliberately broad — all AI features — and the release notes do not publish a per-feature breakdown. Read plainly, that covers the AI surfaces Odoo ships and runs on your behalf:

  • AI agents answering questions, creating records and updating them
  • Agents invoked by automated and scheduled actions, which run without anyone watching
  • Image generation and the enriched content features for websites and mailings
  • The web-search tool that delegates research to an external agent

The scheduled-action case deserves a second look before you budget. A person asking an agent a question is self-limiting — they stop when they have their answer. An automation that summons an agent on a schedule is not self-limiting at all, and it consumes whether or not anybody reads the result. If you are going to be surprised by a credit balance, that is the most likely route.

What does not

Connecting your own AI client to Odoo is a different arrangement, and the distinction is worth being precise about because it decides who pays for the reasoning.

When you connect Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to Odoo through a third-party MCP server — ours or anyone else's — the model is yours and runs on your own Anthropic or OpenAI plan. Odoo is the data source, not the AI provider. There is no Odoo AI feature in the loop, so there is nothing for Odoo credits to meter. The cost sits in the AI subscription your team already pays for, and the marginal cost of the next question is zero.

That is not an argument that one approach is better. Metered pricing is honest pricing, and for occasional use it is often the cheaper answer — you pay for what you use and nothing else. It is an argument for knowing which of the two you have switched on, because the bill arrives in a different place.

The question Odoo has not answered

Odoo 20 also ships its own MCP server, and its documentation lists 27 tools on it, named in the form AI Tool: Search, AI Tool: Update Records and so on. Whether serving one of those tool calls counts as an "AI feature" for credit purposes is not stated anywhere we can find — not in the release notes, not in the 20.0 documentation.

We are not going to resolve that by inference. The tools carry an "AI Tool" prefix, which hints one way; they are also plain ORM operations — search, read, group, create — that Odoo has never charged for and that involve no model inference at all, which hints the other. Both readings are plausible and we have no basis to pick between them.

If you are planning an Odoo 20 deployment around the native MCP server, this is a question worth putting to Odoo directly before you commit, and worth watching your IAP balance for in the first week either way. We will update this page when there is a documented answer rather than a guess.

How to measure it before it surprises you

  1. Find the balance. Settings → Technical → In-App Purchases lists each service and what is left on it. Note the starting number before anyone uses the new features, because a baseline taken afterwards tells you nothing.
  2. Run one real week. Let the team use it normally. A week of actual behaviour beats any estimate, including ours.
  3. Separate the automations. If you have agents on scheduled actions, turn them off for a day and compare. That tells you how much of the draw is people asking questions and how much is a cron job talking to itself.
  4. Then decide. With a week of numbers, the choice between metered Odoo AI and a flat third-party arrangement stops being a philosophical argument and becomes arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Do Odoo 20 AI features cost money?

Yes. Odoo's own 20.0 release notes state that all AI features now need credits, which are bought through in-app purchase (IAP). That covers the AI agents, the generation features and the assistant surfaces inside Odoo. It is a change from earlier versions, where AI features were bundled, and it is the single line in the Odoo 20 notes with the clearest effect on a running budget.

Does connecting Claude or ChatGPT to Odoo consume Odoo AI credits?

Not when the model is yours. If you connect Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to Odoo through a third-party MCP server such as the KSROlabs MCP Server for Odoo, the reasoning happens in your AI client on your own Anthropic or OpenAI plan. Odoo is a data source in that arrangement, not the AI provider, so there is no Odoo AI feature in the loop to draw credits. What we cannot tell you is whether serving a tool call over Odoo's own native MCP server counts as an AI feature for credit purposes — Odoo has not said either way.

How do I check how many Odoo AI credits I am using?

IAP balances and consumption are visible in Odoo under Settings → Technical → In-App Purchases, where each service shows its remaining balance. Check it after the first week of real use rather than at the end of the month: AI consumption is driven by how often people ask, which is the hardest thing to estimate in advance and the easiest thing to measure once it is running.

Is it cheaper to use Odoo's AI or to connect my own model?

It depends entirely on volume, and anyone who answers it confidently without your numbers is guessing. Odoo's AI is metered per use through IAP, so cost scales with how much your team asks. A third-party MCP server is a one-time module purchase and your existing AI subscription, so the marginal cost of the next question is zero. Light, occasional use tends to favour metered credits; heavy daily use across a team tends to favour the flat arrangement. Measure a week of real usage before committing either way.

For what Odoo 20's own MCP server does and where it stops, see the full analysis against the shipped release. If you are on Odoo 14 through 19, native MCP does not exist on your version and the MCP Server for Odoo covers it. On Odoo Online, neither installs — here is why.
